Licensed Veterinary Technician

Reporting Structure

The Licensed Veterinary Technician is under the direct guidance and supervision of the Veterinary Technician Supervisor, Office Manager, DVM, and Practice Manager, who will indicate general assignments, limitations, and priorities. Recurring assignments are performed independently. Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor. Completed work is reviewed for technical accuracy and compliance with established procedures.

Job Overview

The Licensed Veterinary Technician assists the doctors to the fullest possible extent to help improve the quality of care given to the patients and to aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work at Blue Diamond Animal Hospital. The Licensed Veterinary Technician assists with multiple procedures providing care for animals, including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia, as well as client education, marketing, and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases, their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations. This is an overview of the position, and the job responsibilities listed do not encompass the entire position.

Essential Functions

  • Receive, handle and treat patients with skill, compassion, and care, including monitoring during anesthesia, administering fluids, assisting in diagnosing, surgery, and specialized nursing care.
  • Input data into computer software system/patients file
  • Ability to observe the animal’s appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, and discontent.
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies.
  • Placement of IV catheters of various veins
  • Induction of anesthesia/endotracheal intubation
  • Basic knowledge of calculations
  • Perform professional dental cleanings/ dental radiographs
  • Perform all activities allowed by Nevada Veterinary Board, with the exception of inducing anesthesia, intubation, performing euthanasia, cystocentesis, and tooth extractions.
  • Help the doctor treat patients; assist in medical or surgical procedures such as irrigating wounds, medication, cleansing wounds, and bandaging. Perform the full range of “tableside” assistance to the practitioners.
  • Perform in-clinic dewormings; record patient weights, temperatures, and respiration rates; record observations on patient status such as nature and amount of vomitus, bowel movements, and urinations+/- blood. Perform ear cleanings and plucking and dental cleanings for dogs and cats. Monitor and record the vital signs of all patients.
  • Admit and discharge patients on the doctor’s orders, being especially careful to ensure that patients being discharged are in a medically appropriate state, well-groomed, and looking better than on arrival.
  • Answer client questions one-on-one on various aspects of animal care and information on medical discharge sheets.
  • Pass on information/advice from the practitioners; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforce through discussion the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home.
  • Call back/follow-up with clients concerning certain patients; direct clients to the CSR to schedule additional visits when discharge instructions indicate.
  • Help doctor administer anesthetics using aseptic technique, prepare patients for surgery; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; assist in surgery; administer fluids; perform support therapy to patients in surgery and post-op; remove and ready next patient.
  • Properly clean, pack, and autoclave all surgical materials after they are used. Keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, fungal cultures, draw blood for laboratory analysis. Prepare samples for shipment to the laboratory and prepare laboratory forms.
  • Perform other in-house tests such as parvovirus tests and immunoglobin transfer tests, and feline leukemia virus tests.
  • Prepare for office hours by stocking drawers in exam rooms and treatment areas, setting up syringes and supplies, and assuring that drugs and equipment are ready.
  • Provide restraint of pets for examination and treatment by a veterinarian.
  • Prepare medications for both outpatients and inpatients.
  • Be familiar with charges and prepare estimates for clients. Be familiar with the record-keeping process and be able to enter charges for hospitalized cases and reconcile fee slips, flow sheets, and medical records.
  • Take and process all radiographs, following all safety and OSHA regulations. Complete OSHA and radiology training yearly.
  • Assist veterinary assistants in keeping patients clean and dry at all times.
  • Assist the customer services representatives when necessary.

Overnight Veterinary Assistant

Overnight VA Objectives

The Overnight Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager, Office Manager, Veterinary Technician Supervisors, and Overnight VA Champion. This job includes keeping an eye on our patients/boarders overnight, cleaning up after our patients, and administering medications. Must be comfortable with giving injections, administering oral medications, restraining animals, meeting the nursing needs of hospitalized patients, and performing various housekeeping duties for hospital maintenance. Overnight employees are expected to clean and stock the hospital, ensuring the most efficient flow for the day shifts. This position assumes a wide variety of responsibilities and plays a vital role in the consistent care of our patients.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitoring all hospitalized patients throughout the night, consulting with the doctor on patient status.
  • You will be responsible for feeding, bathing, laundry, cleaning kennels, and giving medications.
  • Preparing and administering medications (oral and injectable) and completing specific treatments for each patient as directed.
  • Able to bend, lift, and kneel multiple times for extended periods of time.
  • Work with fecal matter, urine, blood, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the Treatment, Exam rooms, Kennel, and Reception areas according to hospital standards.
  • Hospitalized monitoring includes: charting, monitoring fluid pumps, feeding, and medication and injection administration.

Veterinary Assistant

Job Description

The Veterinary Assistant assists the veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assists with surgical procedures at Blue Diamond Animal Hospital. The Veterinary Assistant uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions but refers to deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the practitioner for decision help. The practitioners assure that the finished work and methods used are technically accurate and in compliance with instructions or established procedures.

Veterinary Assistant Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review medical records and notes made by the admission receptionist in order to discern the nature of the visit and any tests or procedures that may be needed.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs, use proper restraint techniques, and X-Ray assistance.
  • Clean and wrap surgical packs.
  • Housekeeping duties include, but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, laundry, disposing of trash and restocking.
  • Scan and attach patient info to patient files.
  • Assist receptionists with answering phones and scheduling appointments when needed.

Receptionist Objectives

The Veterinary Receptionist’s primary duty is to interact with clients and coordinate communication between doctors, assistants, and clients. You would work under the direct supervision of the Front End Supervisor, Office Manager, Receptionist Supervisor, and/or Veterinary Practice Manager, who will indicate general assignments, limitations, and priorities. The Veterinary Receptionist will greet and welcome all clients and patients in a friendly and professional manner. Receptionists will assume the responsibilities for acquiring the medical and legal information necessary for the performance of their duties.

Essential Job Functions

Animal Caretaker

Job Description

The Kennel Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Kennel Supervisor on duty, who will indicate general assignments and priorities. The Kennel Assistant provides care and basic needs to animals that are being groomed, boarded, or are patients of Blue Diamond Animal Hospital. Kennel Assistants have the opportunity to assist veterinary assistants when their primary duties have been completed. This is a great opportunity to learn more about veterinary assistant duties in hopes of transitioning to veterinary assistant.

Essential Job Functions

  • Following all policies and procedures as well as working effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with the company’s policies.
  • Providing a healthy, safe, clean, and pleasant environment and facilities for the animals and the public.
  • Maintaining a friendly demeanor and providing good and professional customer service while assisting the public.
  • Exhibit a technical knowledge of products and services.
  • Demonstrate the ability to explain and educate clients on products and services with the ability to answer their questions.
  • Feeding and providing water for the animals. Including providing special diets as needed.
  • Walking animals daily, multiple times per day. Per hospital policy and owner request.
  • Exercise/walk borders in a safe manner at all times.
  • Collect any samples requested by the doctor or technicians.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury, or unusual activity to the animal’s health technicians/veterinarians.
  • Completing baths and grooming for animals in the hospital.
  • Daily, thorough cleaning of all animals.
  • Discharge and admit patients at the request of receptionists, practitioners and veterinary assistants, and technicians. Ensure that patients/borders are clean and fresh smelling prior to discharge. Stocking supplies in the hospital as needed.
  • Clean, disinfect and maintain kennels, cages, runs, food/water bowls, and litter boxes as often as is necessary to ensure no cages or kennels are soiled, and odors are not apparent. Performs general cleaning in other areas of the hospital to control the spread of disease.
  • Janitorial duties include laundry, dishes, washing windows, cleaning general clinic grounds, cleaning cages, lunch areas, treatment areas, outdoor pet walking areas, and sweeping/mopping public areas of the hospital.
  • Treating all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
  • Humanely restrain animals for vaccinations, examinations, the performance of medical treatments, and euthanasia as needed. Ensure that cages and patients are properly numbered and identified, and the personal property is stored in the proper area and identified. (Toys, treats, blankets, leashes)
  • Record information such as feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior of patients that are boarded.
  • Entering animal information in the computer system.
  • Working courteously and cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Attending and partaking in department/hospital meetings.
  • Following organizational dress code and reporting to work in professional personal appearance, including the wearing of neat and clean scrubs.
  • Filling in for other areas and performing other tasks/functions as needed, including helping throughout the clinic.
  • Assisting the team members or kennel supervisor with additional tasks as needed.
